RadioDNS is an extensible technology for augmenting radio broadcasts: but we’d not thought of using it elsewhere.
Spotted this morning – an interesting article from Tony Hirst – taking the ideas of RadioDNS and applying it… to books.
We think we’ll leave that to Tony; but great to see people building on RadioDNS’s core principles.

We have been busy making arrangements for the first RadioDNS General Assembly in Geneva on the 10th November.
This is a very important moment in the RadioDNS Project, as it begins the process of establishing the project as a legal entity, with statutes and an elected steering board to determine strategic direction. If you want to be involved with shaping the future of RadioDNS, this is a meeting you should be at.
All the detail of the meeting are here, and that page will be updated as more information becomes available. Please make sure you register to attend, either in person or via teleconference.
As a reminder, the deadline for nominations for the Statutes Drafting Team is tomorrow – 1st November 2009 at 23:59:59 GMT. You can nominate yourself by sending an e-mail to the feedback@radiodns.org address.
Shortly after nominations have closed, we will publish the nominees and explain how voting will be carried out at the General Meeting.

Skip Pizzi has written a great article looking at how radios with internet connectivity might succeed where internet connected TVs, and enhanced TV programming, has been less successful.
In it, he describes how RadioDNS can facilitate the essential connectivity between radio and broadcaster.
You can read the whole article here.

I thought it would be useful to clarify what’s happening with Nominations for the Statutes Drafting Team.
We originally asked for people to nominate themselves for the Steering Team, but what we’re asking for now is people to form a team to do one specific task of creating the Statutes for RadioDNS, and put RadioDNS onto a formal footing. We have contacted all the people who put themselves forward originally, and asked them if they wish to be considered for the Statute Drafting Team. Most people have, some haven’t.
The people building and running RadioDNS should reflect the global potential and benefit to broadcasters, so we want to have nominees from as many different territories as possible. If you are interested in being on Statutes Drafting Team, please e-mail feedback@radiodns.org and let us know. If you know good radio people in any country who you might feel is currently under-represented in RadioDNS, please do tell them about the project and encourage them to get involved.
The list of nominations will close on Sunday 1st November 2009, at 23:59:59
We are still planning the detail of the meeting in Geneva on the 10th November, and will post more details here as we have them, including the list of nominees. Thanks again for your patience as we get ourselves organised.

We were pleased to welcome Ireland’s Catch as a founder supporter, we’re delighted to also see Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTÉ, as a brand new supporter of RadioDNS today.
RadioDNS is being supported by a wider range of broadcasters across the world every day, and we’re delighted at its adoption. If you’re our next supporter, please get in touch.
As a reminder: supporters have an interest in the RadioDNS project, and are supportive of the overall project aims. Appearance on the list of supporters should not be read as a definitive commitment to launch any services, nor any promotional or organisational connection to RadioDNS.

“This technology means advertisers are able to get visual messages to consumers they weren’t able to before,” says Global Radio’s Robin Pembrooke. (Global Radio is a supporter of RadioDNS, and was the first to offer RadioVIS visuals).
There’s more on this story at the UK’s version of Media Week.

“RadioDNS attribue à toutes les stations FM, DAB, DAB+, T-DMB ou DRM une adresse DNS unique permettant aux récepteurs ou téléphones portables équipés de la FM et connectés à Internet de les identifier et d’aller chercher sur leur site web, des données associées.”

Following on from Thursday’s launch of the PURE Sensia, the first radio to incorporate RadioDNS technologies, we were able to talk to Colin Crawford, Head of Marketing at PURE, about why they chose to incorporate RadioVIS in the Sensia.
Colin said:
Sensia is unique in having a 5.7” 640 x 480 touch screen, and making full use of visuals from radio is a key part of making the product so engaging, particularly for a younger audience. We chose to incorporate RadioVIS because it provides massive flexibility and is relatively straightforward to implement for us and for radio stations, as demonstrated by the fact that we are already seeing RadioVIS slideshow in the UK from Capital, Heart, LBC, Fun Kids, Absolute Radio, Planet Rock, NME, Passion for the Planet and many others, and we are getting expressions of interest from broadcasters in many other countries.
Feedback from broadcasters has been equally positive, with some reporting deployment times for RadioVIS of less than 8 working hours.
A number of third party providers are producing RadioVIS services on behalf of broadcasters, using the ability of RadioDNS to forward requests to a third party to handle (after the broadcaster has given permission).
The project expects to see more broadcasters launch RadioDNS based applications, and more manufacturers supporting the technology in devices, in the coming months.
