Shaping the Future of Hybrid Radio at the WorldDAB Automotive Event

Rosie Kendrick 23rd July 2026

Last month, RadioDNS Project Director Nick Piggott joined broadcasters, automotive manufacturers, technology providers and regulators at the WorldDAB Automotive event in Frankfurt to discuss one of the industry’s most important challenges: ensuring broadcast radio continues to thrive in software-defined and connected vehicles.

As vehicle dashboards become increasingly digital, the way listeners discover and interact with radio is changing. Throughout the event, delegates explored how broadcasters, manufacturers and technology companies can work together to ensure radio remains prominent, accessible and engaging for drivers.

Radio in the Connected Car

One of the biggest discussions centred around discoverability and user experience. As infotainment systems become more sophisticated, ensuring broadcast radio remains easy to find is essential. Industry experts explored both user interface design and the role that regulation can play in protecting radio’s prominence within increasingly app-driven environments.

The event also featured new consumer research from Fifty5Blue, demonstrating that drivers continue to value broadcast radio as a trusted, free and reliable service. The findings reinforced what many in the industry already know – listeners expect radio to remain a core part of the in-car experience, even as connected services continue to evolve.

Another recurring theme was the importance of hybrid radio. Representatives from broadcasters and leading automotive manufacturers agreed that combining the reliability of broadcast radio with the enhanced functionality of IP connectivity delivers the best possible experience for listeners. Features such as rich metadata, station logos, programme information and seamless switching between broadcast and IP continue to demonstrate the value of hybrid radio technologies.

The event also highlighted positive progress across Europe, with updates from regulators and broadcasters on DAB+ rollout and prominence initiatives, reflecting continued momentum for digital radio internationally.

The Importance of User Experience

Nick’s presentation focused on the RadioDNS and WorldDAB User Experience Guidelines, an industry collaboration using information collected and developed over several years to help manufacturers and broadcasters deliver a consistent, intuitive and high-quality radio experience across different vehicle platforms.

These guidelines have become an important resource for anyone designing or implementing in-car radio, helping ensure that drivers can easily discover and enjoy radio regardless of the vehicle they are using.

The guidelines have been rewritten in a style familiar to designers, featuring a clear user journey that helps drive implementation.

During the event, Nick also introduced the discussion on Germany’s Public Value regulations with representatives from the German regulator, continuing the important dialogue around how regulation can support radio’s visibility within connected vehicles and still remain simple to use for drivers and cost effective for manufacturers.

Seeing RadioDNS in Action

It was also fantastic to see RF2 Digital / Denex demonstrating their latest automotive solution, built using RadioDNS standards.

Seeing our open standards being implemented in real products is always encouraging and reinforces the value of collaboration across the industry. By adopting common standards, broadcasters and manufacturers can work together to deliver richer, more consistent hybrid radio experiences for listeners around the world.

Looking Ahead

The discussions in Frankfurt highlighted just how important collaboration has become. Whether through user experience guidance, technical standards or regulatory engagement, organisations across the automotive and broadcasting industries are working together to ensure radio remains an essential part of the connected vehicle.

At RadioDNS, we’re proud to play our part in that journey and look forward to continuing these conversations at future industry events and Automotive Workshops.
