We’ve had a busy start to 2025. From right at the beginning of January to just last week, we’ve been at events and conferences, talking to our stakeholders and our “ought-to-be” stakeholders, about how we enhance broadcast radio in a connected world, and specifically in the connected vehicle.
I’m always pleased when someone who’s hearing about our vision and ambitions for broadcast radio for the first time engages so quickly and positively with the idea. It’s reassuring that, amongst all the noise of competitive media, people really do want a great broadcast radio experience in the car.
Recently, we’ve been showcasing how we can provide the glue and varnish to seamlessly join together broadcast radio and broadcaster’s own apps in environments like Android Automotive. It helps that we have a great physical demo unit, which is supported with real prototype content from broadcasters like the BBC, ARD, iHeartMedia and Sveriges Radio, and running a demo app developed by Konsole Lab in Berlin. We can tell a story, but the unit makes it real and something people can experience and explore directly.
(A reminder – our demo radio unit and our demo app are available to you, if you want to build it yourself).
We’re always at pains to explain that we’re not a commercial organisation. It’s our job to set standards and provide support around them, but it’s up to individual radio stations, manufacturers and technology providers to implement them and provide operational support. It’s nice that our professional and visually impactful presence leads people to assume we’re “selling something”. Telling people that we’re not here to sell, but to enable, is our second most important task.
We can’t share information on all the conversations we have about hybrid radio, but it’s fair to say that interest has come from every corner of the ecosystem that’s involved in radio, and from all over the world.
We get a short pause now, which allows us to concentrate on some of our other projects, before we’re “back on the road again” in September. You’l find us at Radio Days Asia in early September, then IBC in Amsterdam, and more dates through to the end of the year.
