Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to the questions we get asked the most, but if you need to know more, just email the Project Office.

What does it cost to use RadioDNS?

There are no contracts or charges from RadioDNS.

You might need to use a Service Provider to do the technology work to implement RadioDNS, but many offer a free tier of usage.

Alternatively, you can do it yourself for free with our HOWTO guides.

What does RadioDNS do?

We make it possible to get information directly from radio stations to radio receivers over the Internet. You can use that information to make radio work and look better on connected devices and cars.

What RadioDNS services are supported in cars today?

Audi, VW, Porsche and BMW all support RadioDNS functionality. Specifically:

  • SPI – Station logos (for FM only in BMW)
  • SPI – Streaming URL (not BMW)
  • SPI – Station name (for FM services, when switched to streaming)

What about other cars?

Other automotive manufacturers are also integrating RadioDNS into their radio systems, in Europe and North America.

Can I find out who’s listening to my station?

Not yet, but we’re working on it.

Is RadioDNS just about connected cars?

Whilst connected cars are really important, you can cut you implementation costs if you use our standards to exchange data with other organisations – for instance, providing accurate information to people like TuneIn (one of our members).

Can I get a list of all the stations in RadioDNS?

No. We aren’t a directory service, so we don’t publish a list. We only put entries into the radiodns.org domain (once we’ve verified them).

There’s some guidance in the technology HOWTOs on how to discover services using RadioDNS and broadcast radio information.
